Ankit Sharma murder: Tahir Hussain, other convicts sentenced to life imprisonment

New Delhi, July 31: A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and all other accused convicted in the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots to life imprisonment.

While pronouncing the sentence, the court termed the crime a “very serious incident” that had shaken society. The judge observed that the manner in which the incident unfolded required society to introspect and reflect on the circumstances that led to the killing.

The court held that the offence was grave and warranted life imprisonment for all those convicted in the case.

The sentencing followed the court’s conviction of Hussain and the other accused for their role in the murder of Sharma, a 26-year-old IB staffer whose body was recovered from a drain during the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020.

The prosecution had alleged that Sharma was attacked and killed by a violent mob during the riots. His murder became one of the prominent cases arising from the violence.

Hussain had denied the allegations against him during the trial.

With Friday’s sentencing order, all those convicted in the case will serve life imprisonment for the offence. The detailed sentencing order is awaited. (Agencies)
