Implement Women’s Reservation Act in True Spirit: PM Modi
by Northlines · NorthlinesNEW DELHI, Apr 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act in its true spirit, stating that the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections should be held with the quota for women in place.
In a letter to floor leaders of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha ahead of a special three-day sitting of Parliament, Modi urged all members to unite and pass necessary amendments to operationalise the law, officially known as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
In his April 11 letter, the Prime Minister said that after extensive deliberations, the time has come to implement the legislation across the country. He stressed that it is imperative for the 2029 general elections and state Assembly polls to be conducted with women’s reservation in effect.
The Budget Session of Parliament has been extended, with a special sitting scheduled from April 16 to 18. The Act provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, and proposes increasing the total strength of the Lok Sabha to 816 seats, of which 273 will be reserved for women.
