J&K Braces For Wet Weather, MeT Warns Of Heavy To Very Heavy Rain In Jammu Division

Srinagar, Aug 7: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to experience another wet spell over the next 10 days, with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the Jammu division and warning of possible flash floods and landslides during August 9-11.

A MeT official said August 7 and 8 are expected to witness one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places, with brief intense showers likely at a few locations.

Between August 9 and 11, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at most places across Jammu and Kashmir. The department has specifically warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few districts of the Jammu division, while brief intense heavy showers are likely at some places in the Kashmir division.

The MeT has also forecast light rain and thundershowers at many places from August 12 to 17, with brief intense showers possible at a few locations.

Issuing an advisory for August 9-11, the department cautioned that torrential rain and brief intense showers could trigger flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas and lead to waterlogging in low-lying locations.

“Torrential rain and brief intense heavy showers may generate flashfloods and landslides at vulnerable places and cause water logging in low lying areas,” the MeT said.

Residents have been advised to avoid nallahs, landslide-prone areas and other vulnerable locations during the period of intense rainfall.

Authorities have also been asked to remain alert and closely monitor vulnerable areas to deal with any weather-related incidents, the department said. (Agencies)
