We will corner govt, make it accountable for its anti-people approach: Cong

JAMMU Tawi, Sept 18: The differences between the coalition partners, the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Congress Party, have become so much bitter that the Congress has, for the first time, decided to corner the NC Government and make it accountable in the upcoming Assembly session for its anti-people approach and policies.

This is for the first time that the Congress, the coalition partner of the ruling NC, has decided to grill the J&K government in the upcoming Assembly session and make it accountable on several issues concerning general masses, sources in the Congress said.

The Congress grilling the NC led J&K Government, its ally, in the Assembly session will be a big political embarrassment as both NC and Congress are allies at the national level also.

The Autumn session of the Assembly will begin in Kashmir from 21st of this month onwards. The NC has 41 members in the 90 member House, while the Congress has 6.

However, the Congress questioning the NC government for its anti-people approach in the House will only mean that there is no meeting point and the differences between both these parties are all set to widen beyond a meeting point.

The NC government was formed in the Union Territory (UT) of J&K in October 2024. The Congress, being the coalition partner, did not join the government since the formation of government in J&K and never opposed the NC government in the Assembly.

“We will now make the NC government accountable in the upcoming Assembly session and grill it on it’s several anti-people policies and approach,” Chief Spokesperson of JKPCC, Ravinder Sharma, said, when contacted by the Northlines.

There are several issues in J&K like that of the NHM employees, the power hike, the issue of daily wagers and others, he said, while adding, “We will seek govt’s response and make it accountable in this regard in the upcoming Assembly session”, Sharma said.

“We will support the NC only when the BJP tries to topple the J&K government otherwise we have no understanding with the NC,” Sharma said, while adding, “We have so far not received any invitation from the NC regarding coalition partners’ meeting and if invitation comes, we will take the call at an appropriate time,” he said.

The Congress Party sources said that it will not compromise on issues concerning general masses and will grill the NC in the upcoming Assembly session.

The ruling NC government has already been facing heat and has come under severe criticism over its decision to hike the power tariff in J&K not only from its ally Congress, but also from the main opposition party, the BJP.
