Sundarbani, May 24

Despite claims of the administration of containing ‘self-styled’ journalists across the Union Territory, operation of such journalists is reportedly going unabated in Sunderbani.

According to sources, some self-styled reporters are allegedly misusing the identity of journalism for blackmail, intimidation, and personal financial gain.

“Some persons allegedly roam with microphones, bikes, and vehicles posing as media professionals while simultaneously working as contractors,” said sources, adding that these individuals allegedly exploit fear among officials in departments such as Rural Development and Public Works Department (PWD) to secure undue benefits and influence.

Sources alleged irregularities in developmental works in remote villages, claiming that minor works worth around ₹10,000 were allegedly projected into bills amounting to lakhs of rupees.

“These so-called journalists are attempting to provoke public unrest and encourage protests in connection with an FIR-related matter,” sources said and added that the content of the video had the potential to disturb communal harmony.

Sources said that the district administration, including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Deputy Commissioner of Rajouri, must identify individuals allegedly misusing the profession of journalism and take strict action against them.

They asserted that some such individuals are facing criminal cases, including theft-related matters.

Sources have further sought intervention of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations Jammu and Kashmir, for verification of media credentials and scrutiny of the financial activities of individuals impersonating as journalists in areas including Sunderbani, Kalakote, and nearby tehsils.

It is pertinent to mention that last year, the Lieutenant Governor’s administration had directed all the Deputy Commissioners to verify credentials of journalists working in their respective districts.
