Delhi Police Seek X Account Details, Removal of Posts Targeting PM Modi During CJP Protests

NEW DELHI, Jul 29: Delhi Police have issued a notice to social media platform X, seeking details of accounts that allegedly shared abusive and defamatory posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and security forces during the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests, officials said.

According to the police, an FIR has been registered over the circulation of “derogatory, malicious and defamatory” content directed at the Prime Minister and other constitutional authorities during the protests. The platform has been asked to identify the accounts responsible for uploading the material and remove the posts, photographs and videos at the earliest.

The notice also seeks subscriber details of the accounts involved, including names, addresses, phone numbers, email IDs, and login and logout records with date and time stamps to assist the ongoing investigation.

In addition, X has been directed to preserve all relevant data linked to the posts and issue a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) to ensure the electronic evidence remains admissible during the investigation.

The action follows earlier notices issued on July 27 directing the removal of content uploaded during the CJP protests at Jantar Mantar and the “Chalo Sansad” march that allegedly contained abusive and offensive remarks against the Prime Minister.

Police said cyber and social media monitoring teams are continuously scanning online platforms for inflammatory or unlawful content related to the protests. They added that several objectionable posts had already been removed following notices issued to social media intermediaries.

Officials also said investigators are monitoring online activity linked to the protests to curb the spread of misinformation and other content that may violate applicable laws. Earlier, Delhi Police had reportedly identified over 400 Pakistan-linked social media accounts allegedly involved in spreading misinformation, deepfake videos and false narratives related to the CJP protests.
