Centre tells J&K savings cannot be utilized for new, unapproved works
by Northlines · NorthlinesJammu Tawi, Sep 15: The Government of India has conveyed to the Jammu & Kashmir administration that any savings accrued under flood management projects must be strictly utilized for components already approved, and not used for new or unapproved works.
According to the minutes of the meeting held on April 24, 2026, to review flood management projects of the J&K and Ladakh Union Territories, the J&K Government requested the representatives of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation to allow the use of savings for bank protection works under certain components.
“It was also brought out that savings have arisen under certain components and that the Government of Jammu & Kashmir envisages carrying out bank protection works from these savings,” reads the record note.
The record note further states that representatives of the Union Ministry clarified that any savings within a project can only be utilized for components already approved by the Ministry’s Advisory Committee, and not for any new or unapproved works.
The meeting was chaired by the Commissioner (Flood Management), Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, and attended by representatives of the Central Water Commission, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
