Mamata Banerjee’s defiance and INDI Alliance’s complicity is dangerous for the nation

“Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign, aided and abetted by Rahul Gandhi and INDI Alliance leaders, is a direct assault on the Constitution. The people’s mandate must prevail, and the transfer of power must be smooth, lawful, and immediate. Anything less is a betrayal of the republic. This is not just a crisis in Bengal—it is a crisis for Indian democracy,” stated Brigadier Anil Gupta (retd) in a press release.
The people of Bengal have spoken decisively through the ballot box. Yet, Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign despite the clear mandate of the voters is not only a grave insult to the democratic will of Bengal but also a dangerous step toward a constitutional crisis. Democracy is built on the principle that governments derive their legitimacy from the consent of the governed. By clinging to power after losing that consent, Mamata Banerjee is undermining the very foundation of India’s parliamentary democracy, asserted the veteran security and strategic affairs analyst.
Highlighting Mamata Banerjee’s Pattern of Disrespect for Democratic Norms in the past he revealed, “This is not the first time Mamata Banerjee has shown disregard for constitutional propriety. Her tenure has been marked by repeated confrontations with constitutional authorities and institutions.” Some of the glaring instances include;
She remained at loggerheads with the Governor’s and displayed open defiance of the Governor’s Office. On multiple occasions, she publicly insulted and undermined the constitutional role of the Governor, refusing to cooperate with directives meant to safeguard democratic functioning.
Mamta mastered the art of suppression of Opposition Voices. Her government has often been accused of using state machinery to silence dissent, from blocking rallies to intimidating political opponents.
Mamta was often seen challenging the Centre leading to the erosion of Federal Norms. She repeatedly challenged the authority of central institutions, not through constructive dialogue but through outright defiance, weakening cooperative federalism.
“Her current refusal to resign is the culmination of this pattern—a blatant attempt to subvert constitutional norms and deny the people of Bengal the government they have chosen,” asserted Brig Gupta.
Equally troubling is the role of Rahul Gandhi and other INDI Alliance leaders. Instead of standing with the people of Bengal and defending democratic traditions, they have chosen to shield Mamata Banerjee’s undemocratic behaviour. Their support is not accidental—it reflects a deeper disregard for constitutional propriety. Such a coalition is dangerous for the Republic and poses serious challenges to national security.
Time and again, Rahul Gandhi has failed to respect electoral verdicts, preferring to question institutions rather than accept the people’s decision. His endorsement of Mamata Banerjee’s defiance is consistent with this pattern.
The INDI Alliance has repeatedly placed political expediency above democratic principles. By defending Mamata Banerjee, they are prioritizing their fragile coalition over the sanctity of the Constitution. Its leaders have often attacked the judiciary, the Election Commission, and other constitutional bodies whenever verdicts or rulings go against them. Their support for Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign is another example of this dangerous trend.
“By standing behind Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi and the INDI Alliance are complicit in eroding the democratic fabric of the nation. Their actions send a dangerous message—that electoral mandates can be disregarded if they do not suit political convenience,” rued Brig Gupta.
Mamta Banerjee will be well advised to respect the people’s verdict and vow down to their will with grace and dignity lest constitutional powers are exercised by the Governor to unceremoniously remove her. The Constitution of India provides clear mechanisms to ensure a smooth transfer of power when a government loses its mandate. The Governor of West Bengal will have to invoke them in case she remained adamant.
What is happening in Bengal is not an isolated incident but has larger implications for the Indian Democracy. It is part of a broader pattern where certain leaders and parties, when faced with electoral defeat, choose to undermine institutions rather than respect the people’s will. If Mamata Banerjee’s defiance is allowed to stand, it will set a dangerous precedent across India. Other leaders may feel emboldened to disregard mandates, plunging the nation into repeated constitutional crises. The fictitious “Vote Chori” allegations will become more frequent and louder, portraying our democracy in bad light.
“Rahul Gandhi and the INDI Alliance’s support for Mamata Banerjee makes this crisis even more alarming. It signals that major opposition leaders are willing to sacrifice democratic principles for short-term political gain. This is not just about Bengal—it is about the future of Indian democracy,” rued Brig Gupta.
