Jammu, Aug 7: An SUV evaded a security checkpoint on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district early Friday, prompting police to open fire and launch a massive search operation involving the district police, CRPF and Army, officials said.

The incident took place around 3.30 am when the SUV was travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu. Police personnel deployed at the Chanderkote security checkpoint signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly sped away, they said.

Officials said police fired three rounds at the fleeing vehicle in an attempt to intercept it. However, the SUV continued towards the Nashri area before the driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled.

The district police later seized the suspicious Scorpio near Dalwas, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Arun Gupta, said.

“The district police have seized the suspicious Scorpio near Dalwas, and further investigation is underway. Detailed information will be shared after the investigation progresses,” the SSP said.

Following the incident, security forces intensified searches in and around the area to trace the driver and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s escape from the checkpoint.

Investigators are also probing the motive behind the incident and examining the seized vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation. (Agencies)
