NEW DELHI, Aug 22: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Punjab Government and the state’s Director General of Police to inquire into an allegation that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife demanded Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case, officials said on Saturday.

The Commission has sought an action taken report from the authorities within two weeks, following a complaint filed by the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO).

According to the complaint, a retired judge had publicly alleged that a demand for Rs 5 crore was made in connection with a rape case, allegedly involving the Punjab Chief Minister’s wife. The NHRC took cognisance of the allegation and directed the state authorities to examine the matter.

The complaint raised concerns that any such alleged interference could affect the victim’s right to dignity and safety, besides compromising a fair investigation and access to justice.

The NHRC proceedings dated August 21 stated that the complainant had referred to the alleged statement of the retired judge regarding the demand for money in connection with the rape case.

An NHRC official confirmed that the Commission had taken cognisance of the allegation and sought a report from the Punjab authorities.

The allegations have not been established, and the NHRC direction is for an inquiry into the claims.

No immediate reaction was available from the Punjab Government on the NHRC proceedings. (Agencies)
