THE outgoing government’s Economic Development Minister is calling for the creation of an ‘economic taskforce’ made up of States Members.
Speaking to the JEP following his successful re-election in the St John, St Lawrence and Trinity constituency, Deputy Kirsten Morel called for a rethink of how Jersey’s government and States Assembly operates, arguing that the Assembly’s current structure created an unnecessary divide.
He suggested that States Members should be allowed to hold ministerial and scrutiny roles simultaneously and backed the creation of an “economic taskforce” drawing on the experience of various Members of the Assembly to help tackle major policy challenges.
This, he said, would also help balance the “massive portfolios” typically handed to individual Ministers.
“What I’m most interested in is getting more States Members participating in government – and personally I think you can be an Assistant Minister in economic development and still do scrutiny and health.”
His idea to scrap the strict division between government and scrutiny, he said, had been “floated with other States Members,” some of whom “are certainly interested in the idea”.
Speaking about his own ambitions, Deputy Morel said: “I would like to stay working in the economy, and on French relations – these two areas – potentially environment as well.”
