Sitting Deputies given renewed mandate by voters

TWO district politicians who ran for re-election to the States Assembly have thanked voters in neighbouring parishes for backing them for another four-year term.
Carolyn Labey and Rose Binet were re-elected as Deputies for Grouville and St Martin, with voters backing the two incumbents ahead of the attempt to return to the political fray by former Education Minister Scott Wickenden.
Deputy Labey’s success, topping the polls with 2,379 votes, makes her the longest-serving States Member, having first been elected to represent Grouville in November 2002 – meaning her political career started five-and-a-half years before her new colleague Deputy-elect Gabriel Raimondo was born.
While Deputy Lyndon Farnham was first elected to the Assembly in 1999, he retired temporarily from politics between 2005 and 2011 and has so far completed 21 years’ service.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the result,” said Deputy Labey. “I’m pleased to have got back in and to have topped the poll with more votes than last time [having gained 1,981 votes in 2022, when three Deputies were elected].”
At the start of what will be eighth term, Deputy Labey said she hoped she may be able to continue in the role of International Development Minister, depending on who is elected as Chief Minister.
She also said she wanted to focus on previous initiatives, including setting up community support groups in both parishes, holding regular parish surgeries, improved facilities for young people and enhancing Gorey Village with floral displays.
Meanwhile, Deputy Binet said she was very pleased to have been elected after amassing 1,846 votes, around 350 more than her 2022 tally.
“I’d like to thank all those who voted for me, as well as the officials who worked so hard on running the election,” she said.
Returning to the Assembly after being first elected in 2022, Deputy Binet added: “I am hoping to return to my [Assistant Minister] job at Health.”
It is understood that Deputy Binet’s prospects of resuming her role may depend on whether her brother, Senator-elect Tom Binet, is re-elected to the top job in Health when ministers are elected on 29 June.
It was a disappointing election for Mr Wickenden, who was seeking to return to the Assembly after representing St Helier between 2014 and 2022 but finished last with 1,303 votes.
The district result was one of the last to be announced on Monday morning, timed officially at 2.57am. This came after Grouville was the 11th parish to announce its Senatorial result at 1.49am, almost two hours after the equivalent announcement in St Martin.
