ISLAND Energy has said no readings were discovered at Cherry Orchard Court that would have required an evacuation of the building, after emergency services were called to the Valley Road site on Wednesday morning following two separate reports of a smell of gas in the area.

The utility firm stated that “a minor gas escape” that posed no safety risk was found following an extended search “beyond the perimeter”.

Gas engineers followed a thorough checking process involving tests using specialist detection equipment, after residents in a block of flats were evacuated from their homes as a precaution by the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service.

“No readings were found that would have required an evacuation of the building,” Island Energy stated in an update on Wednesday afternoon.

“The team carried out an extended search beyond the perimeter and found a minor gas escape that posed no safety risk which the team are dealing with.”

The statement also reminded Islanders that if they smell gas or suspect a gas escape to call Island Energy’s 24-hour emergency line on 01534 755555.
