ISLANDERS are being warned about a scam in which fraudsters posing as HSBC are cold-calling Jersey residents in an attempt to obtain personal and banking details.

The Jersey Financial Services Commission said yesterday that scammers had been using the phone number +44 (0)800 028 6889 while falsely claiming to represent the bank.

The regulator stressed that the number was “not in any way associated with HSBC” and warned that criminals may use a range of different numbers and increasingly sophisticated tactics.

The JFSC urged Islanders not to share passwords, PINs or banking information over the phone unless they were certain of the caller’s identity.

The watchdog added that scammers were increasingly impersonating banks, government authorities and other trusted organisations using cloned websites, copied branding and even AI-generated voices.

Anyone contacted by the fraudulent number has been asked to report it to the JFSC’s Enforcement team.
