ASBESTOS contamination identified in an area along the Five Mile Road in St Ouen has now been cleaned up, government officials have confirmed.

The area, opposite Jersey Pearl, was cordoned off over the weekend, with signage warning members of the public about the contamination and that safety overalls and respiratory equipment must be worn if entering the zone.

The Department for Infrastructure and Environment confirmed to the JEP on Monday that “small quantities of cement-bonded asbestos” had been found in the area and that Natural Environment officers had been sent to clean up the area.

“Should the public see anything suspected to be asbestos, please do not pick it up, contact the Parish who will identify the landowner,” they added at the time.

The department has now confirmed that the clean-up is complete.

The department has since reminded Islanders that information about safe household disposal of asbestos can be found under the environment section of the gov.je website.
