UK man denies breaking immigration law by transporting Albanian asylum seekers

A 45-YEAR-OLD UK man has denied breaking the Island’s immigration law by carrying two Albanian nationals on a boat from France to Jersey.

James Andrew Harris, of Eaton Bray in Bedfordshire, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with two counts of facilitating the entry of the men, who claimed asylum when they arrived in the Island.

The court heard that Mr Harris arrived in the Island on Friday before allegedly transporting the two men from France to Jersey the following day.

They were refused entry by Jersey Customs and Immigration Services officers and returned to France.

Mr Harris pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The case was presented for the Crown by Legal adviser Luisa Stuart.

Ms Stuart applied for the case to be sent to the Royal Court, arguing that the alleged offences were too serious to be dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court.

Assistant Magistrate Adam Clarke agreed and subsequently declined an application for bail, remanding Mr Harris in custody.

The case will be formally sent to the Royal Court on 8 October.

Mr Harris was represented by Advocate James Bell.
