TWO Jersey charity leaders recently swapped their day jobs for Buckingham Palace earlier this month after receiving invitations to one of the King’s annual garden parties.
Jess Bailey, service manager at Freedom From Domestic Abuse (Freeda), and Sarah Tumelty, chief executive of Sanctuary Trust, were among guests invited to the royal event in London on 6 May in recognition of their community work.
Ms Bailey told the JEP that when she first received the invite, she thought it wasn’t real.
“I genuinely thought it was a scam email and had to check with colleagues to make sure it was real,” she recalled.
“Once it sank in, it was more shock than anything else – being invited to something like that had never really crossed my mind, so it felt very surreal and real privilege to attend.”
Reflecting on the day itself, Ms Bailey described the atmosphere as “incredible”.
“There were so many friendly people from completely different sectors and backgrounds, all there because of the work they do in their communities.
“The gardens were huge and beautiful to walk around, and the sandwiches and cakes were amazing!
“I didn’t personally get the chance to speak with any of the Royals on the day, but it was still a really special experience to be part of the event.”
Ms Tumelty described the experience as a “real privilege and something I’m very grateful for”.
“I had a wonderful day, enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, and even managed to see King Charles,” she added.
“It was also a great opportunity to represent Sanctuary Trust and share the experience with others.
“Seeing everyone dressed up and making the most of such a special occasion made it a day I’ll remember for a long time.”
