A 42-YEAR-OLD man has been placed on probation after pushing an 11-year-old boy and pouring a pint of beer over another person.

St Helier Centenier Sharon Rive, prosecuting, told the court that police received a report in May from the mother of an 11-year-old boy who had been assaulted while riding his scooter.

Jason Gerald Le Ruez pleaded guilty to common assault and was sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court last week by Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu.

Le Ruez pushed the child over without provocation, leaving a mark on his shoulder. The boy said the incident hurt and left him feeling scared, the court heard.

Police also received a report of a separate incident in the outdoor seating area of The Oche Club darts bar at the Weighbridge.

Le Ruez poured a pint of beer over the victim’s head before walking away towards the Commercial Buildings.

He was identified through witness descriptions and CCTV footage.

Advocate James Bell, defending, said Le Ruez co-operated with the police and identified himself when shown the CCTV.

He said the child had not fallen to the ground and described the offending as an “isolated incident” that was out of character.

The court heard that Le Ruez had accepted responsibility for his actions and had no previous convictions.

Advocate Bell asked the court to impose a nine-month probation order involving weekly meetings and substance-awareness and mental health work.

Mr Le Cornu told Le Ruez: “Yes, you have had issues in the past, but these don’t justify your behaviour.”

He added: “The court accepts that this is a one-off and I am very impressed with your letter to the court and what is said in the report.”

Le Ruez was placed on probation for nine months.
