A PARTNERSHIP built around Jersey’s world-famous dairy breed is helping improve the lives of thousands of farming families in Zambia, the country’s High Commissioner has said during a visit to the Island.
Her Excellency Ms Macenje Mazoka, Zambia’s High Commissioner to the UK, attended this year’s Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society Summer Show alongside economic counsellor Kasalika Mwansa Mulenga as guests of the Society and Jersey Overseas Aid.
JOA provides funding to the RJA&HS to deliver two major dairy programmes in Zambia – both of which involve training, technical support and genetic improvement initiatives to strengthen smallholder dairy farming.
The Jersey cow has proven particularly well suited to the Zambian environment because of its ability to thrive in warmer conditions while still producing high-quality milk efficiently.
According to Jersey Overseas Aid, the partnership now supports more than 8,500 farmers across Zambia.
Speaking during her visit, Ms Mazoka praised the programme and those who had made it possible.
“We value the commitment shown by Jersey Overseas Aid and its partners, and we believe this collaboration continues to make a meaningful contribution to sustainable agricultural development, improved livelihoods, and food security in Zambia,” the High Commissioner said.
David Hambrook, head of international dairy development at the RJA&HS, said the projects built on Jersey’s global dairy reputation.
“Through this expertise, we are enabling smallholder farmers in Zambia to boost dairy productivity, improve nutrition, and strengthen household incomes,” he said.
The visit comes ahead of the African Jersey Forum conference, which is due to take place in Zambia later this year and will bring together dairy specialists from across the region.
