THE future of Victoria Marine Lake remains uncertain, with the Infrastructure Minister confirming he is “open to all options” – including demolition.
Deputy Jonathan Renouf told the States Assembly this week that he did not know “when, how, or if” the 129-year-old structure would be restored to safe public use.
Concerns about the West Park facility intensified after a child was swept through a hole in the seawall last month and suffered minor injuries. Deputy Renouf said “something much more serious” could have happened.
Safety measures have since been introduced, while the public is urged not to enter or swim in the deteriorating listed structure.
Deputy Kirsten Morel asked whether Deputy Renouf would ensure demolition “is one of the potential options that should be looked at”, to which the minister replied: “I would consider all options, and clearly, all options would include a removal of the structure.”
He acknowledged that the structure is listed and also reiterated that its future would be considered “in the light of all the other priorities that we have for infrastructure spending”.
In 2014, around £314,000 was spent on repair work as part of a bid to bring the Marine Lake back into full operation, which was ultimately unsuccessful.
St Helier Constable Inna Gardiner sought £400,000 to repair the pool last year, and £60,000 per year to maintain the facility going forward, but this was rejected by politicians.
