A UNIQUE German fortification overlooking St Ouen’s Bay has reopened after ten years of restoration work and will be open to the public this weekend.
The site, codenamed Resistance Nest La Mare Mill, is virtually invisible to passers-by and consists of a 57-tonne cast gun turret surrounded by crew accommodation and ammunition storage.
Part of a second line of defence sited on high ground, the bunker originally operated in tandem with six other turrets along the bay, one of which survives on private land. The remaining structures escaped destruction during the post-war scrap drive, after an intervention by Jersey Water.
Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor, Vice-Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, carried out the official opening last weekend, paying tribute to the efforts of the Channel Islands Occupation Society in restoring the site to its original appearance. Sir Jerry was joined by a group including the Bailiff, Robert MacRae.
Resistance Nest La Mare Mill will open to the public on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, with visitors also able to see Living History displays representing Liberation forces in May 1945. Parking will be available at the bottom of Val de la Mare reservoir, from where there will be signs to the bunker.
