GHALCA president reveals failed efforts to keep Hohoe United in GPL

· GhanaSoccernet

The president of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has disclosed that despite concerted efforts by football authorities, Hohoe United could not be persuaded to reverse their decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League.

Hohoe United officially pulled out of the 2025/26 season in April 2026, citing unfair treatment, poor officiating, and a three-match home ban imposed by the Ghana Football Association following disciplinary action after their controversial fixture against Vision FC. The club also faced a financial penalty.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Ansah revealed that both GHALCA and the GFA engaged the club in attempts to resolve the impasse, but the decision had already been finalised internally.

"We did our best. Personally, I called almost everybody that matters in that team. I am aware the General Secretary and the FA President did the same," Ansah said.

"They had already concluded with their board that they were withdrawing from the league. We had little power to force them to stay on board. Everything we did to get them back on board did not work out."

The withdrawal has reignited debate over officiating standards, disciplinary processes, and governance in the Ghana Premier League, with stakeholders calling for reforms to strengthen trust in the system.

Hohoe United's exit also raises fresh concerns about club sustainability and the credibility of the domestic competition.
