The National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has called on Ghanaians to unite in prayer and support for the Black Stars as they prepare to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 15, the Chief Imam extended his "warmest goodwill, solidarity and prayers" to the national team ahead of Wednesday's Group L opener against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto.

"His Eminence prays that Almighty Allah grants the players, technical team and management divine guidance, strength, wisdom, unity, discipline and resilience throughout the tournament," the statement said.

He also prayed for the team's safety, protection from injuries and the strength to represent Ghana with excellence, dignity and honour on football's biggest stage.

The call comes after officials of the Ghana Football Association paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Imam before the Black Stars departed for the World Cup.

Following the meeting, Sheikh Sharubutu directed Imams across the country, particularly Regional and District Imams, to include the Black Stars in their prayers throughout the tournament.

Special prayers are expected to be offered ahead of Ghana's opening match against Panama as the Black Stars begin their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.

"The Black Stars carry not only the aspirations of football supporters but also the collective hopes, pride and identity of the Ghanaian people," the Chief Imam said.

"Their participation on the global stage serves as a powerful symbol of national unity and patriotism, transcending political, ethnic and religious differences."

He urged all Ghanaians, regardless of their backgrounds, to rally behind the team.

"I call on all Ghanaians to rally behind the team with one voice and one spirit as they seek to make our nation proud."

The statement concluded with a prayer for success during the tournament.

"May Almighty Allah bless the Black Stars with success and make their participation a source of pride, joy and inspiration for Ghana and future generations. Go Black Stars! Go Ghana!"

The Black Stars departed Rhode Island for Toronto on Monday, where they will complete their preparations before facing Panama on Wednesday evening. Ghana will also take on England and Croatia in their remaining Group L matches.
