Article Summary

  • Ewan McGregor says he’s still pitching more Star Wars, from Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 to other Jedi-era stories.
  • One Obi-Wan idea would have Kenobi trying to reconnect with Yoda after Revenge of the Sith and Order 66.
  • McGregor also floated an Obi-Wan and Hera Syndulla romance, though he admits Star Wars timeline issues complicate it.
  • Hayden Christensen wants more Clone Wars-era Star Wars, teasing a live-action Anakin and Obi-Wan reunion with old co-stars.

At the risk of sounding like beating a dead horse, Ewan McGregor really wants back into Star Wars as Obi-Wan Kenobi from a second season of his titular series or ANY future franchise-related project related to his character, even going above and beyond voicing his counterpart in the Disney+ series Maul – Shadow Lord, when generally, voice actor James Arnold Taylor is often playing his animated counterpart. This time around, while speaking with Variety at the Edinburgh International Film Festival to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his breakout film Trainspotting, McGregor had specific ideas to pitch on what Obi-Wan could be doing while his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays General Hera Syndulla, was filming the Disney+ live-action series Ahsoka, set for a season two release. His Obi-Wan Kenobi co-star, Hayden Christensen, who's also set to reprise his role again as Anakin Skywalker for the same show, spoke with the Hey Jonas! podcast about his interest in getting himself back into the fold and revisiting a space that Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni is all too familiar with as creator of The Clone Wars.

As far as ideas McGregor has come up with, one involves Obi-Wan trying to recreate with Jedi Master Yoda (Frank Oz), who's stashed himself away on Dagobah at the end of Revenge of the Sith (2005) to flee the Emperor's standing Order 66 of the Jedi Purge before Luke (Mark Hamill) would find him in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). "It was very casual, but I said there's got to be something," McGregor said. "Because Yoda's somewhere else. After the end of 'Episode III', when we all go to the four or five corners of the galaxy — or however many corners it's got! — I won't have been in touch with him. But he's out there. So I think there could be a story there where I'm trying to reach out to him."

He also pitched a dream project involving his wife that would see a love story between Obi-Wan and Hera, explaining logistically, "I got very excited when Mary started working on 'Ahsoka'. I thought, maybe this is the big love story — Obi-Wan and Hera," he said. However, while McGregor said that "time doesn't really mean anything" in the various "multiverses" of Star Wars, he acknowledged that Kenobi and Hera "were in different time frames." During the events of the animated Rebels, which precedes Ahsoka, Hera (Vanessa Marshall) fell in love with the Jedi Kanan Jarrus (Freddy Prinze Jr) before he sacrificed himself at the end of the series to save his crew.

Christensen's return was in some ways more shocking, but presented new opportunities to tell new Darth Vader stories and more importantly, his alter ego, Anakin as we got a deeper dive into the pre-ROTS timeline that saw him and McGregor sharing the screen again in a sparring moment in a flashback and he's been able to visit The Clone Wars timeline with Ariana Greenblatt playing the younger counterpart of Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano. As Christensen discussed McGregor's ongoing interest in playing Obi-Wan again, he said, "What I've had a lot of fun with is getting to play the character during the Clone Wars timeline, which they did in the animated world. That's a lot of fun because it's a different side of the character." After his reveal as Force Ghost Anakin advising Dawson's Ahsoka in season two and asked if we would see a "straight up Anakin show," the actor responded, "I know that Ewan McGregor would love to do more with it, and I heard Natalie (Portman) would love to come back, and Sam Jackson, so you can get the band back." Portman played Padme Amidala, and Jackson played Mace Windu in the prequels.
