Mike Flanagan Joins Henry Cavill's WARHAMMER 40K Series at Amazon, but Fans May Be Waiting Years

The road to Amazon's live-action Warhammer 40,000 universe just got a whole lot more exciting. While fans have been eagerly waiting for meaningful updates on Henry Cavill's passion project, Games Workshop has finally shared some fnew details that give us a better idea of where things stand.

The good news is that acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan has officially joined the creative team. The bad news? You're going to need plenty of patience.

In Games Workshop's latest annual report, CEO Kevin Rountree confirmed that Flanagan is now involved with the highly anticipated series. Best known for The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and the upcoming Carrie series, Flanagan has already begun shaping the project.

According to Rountree, Flanagan has completed the "initial outlines" and "should soon be moving on to script."

That's a major milestone for a project that's been developing behind the scenes since Cavill first revealed his partnership with Amazon more than three years ago. Even with progress being made, Rountree made it clear that fans shouldn't expect the series to hit Prime Video anytime soon.

He explained: "This is a long-term partnership with Amazon – and these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market."

That statement also confirms Amazon's ambitions extend well beyond a single show. Rountree specifically referred to "films and television series," confirming the goal is to build a much larger Warhammer 40,000 universe over time.

Flanagan's involvement feels like a great fit. While he's built his reputation telling unforgettable horror stories, he's also proven he knows how to balance character-driven drama with massive, atmospheric world-building.

Considering the grim darkness, religious fanaticism, cosmic horror, and endless warfare that define Warhammer 40,000, he's stepping into a universe that already shares plenty of DNA with the kinds of stories he excels at telling.

The annual report also revealed that Amazon and Games Workshop have more than just the live-action series in the works.

An animated Warhammer 40,000 series centered on the Space Marines' Deathwatch is also in development. The project is being written by John Orloff, whose recent credits include Masters of the Air.

While no additional story details were revealed, it's another sign that Games Workshop is fully committed to expanding the franchise across multiple formats.

There's even more coming for fans before the live-action series eventually arrives. Warhammer will be represented in Season 2 of Amazon's Secret Level, with an episode set in the Age of Sigmar universe, giving audiences another chance to experience one corner of Games Workshop's sprawling fantasy worlds.

Although the wait may end up stretching across several more years, it's reassuring to know the project continues to move forward. Bringing Warhammer 40,000 to live action was always going to be an enormous undertaking, especially with the scale of its mythology and decades of lore that fans hold dear.

When Cavill first announced the partnership, he made it clear how much care was going into building the franchise. He wrote on Instagram:

"Together, we've been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts. Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret."

That secret is still being kept under lock and key, but adding Mike Flanagan to the creative team is one of the biggest and most exciting updates we've had since the project was announced.

It doesn't make the wait any shorter, but it certainly gives fans another reason to believe Cavill's dream adaptation is heading in the right direction.
