Daisy Ridley to Star in VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA Reboot Series for Paramount+

Daisy Ridley is trading lightsabers for submarines as she prepares to lead a new sci-fi adventure series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, currently in development at Paramount+.

This new take on the classic franchise involves a mysterious submarine, a secret government program, an ancient civilization, and some seriously strange things lurking beneath the ocean.

The project comes from Legendary Television, with Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) writing the series and Matt Shakman (WandaVision, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) attached to direct. Both will executive produce alongside Ridley.

According to Deadline, a writers' room has been set up, so the creative team is actively working on bringing this underwater adventure to life.

Ridley will play Lee Crane, a brilliant ocean scientist whose life takes a dramatic turn when her twin sister is killed during a disastrous Arctic expedition.

The tragedy pulls Lee into a classified government operation involving the USS Seaview, a retro-futuristic submarine discovered frozen beneath the ice.

The submarine is covered in strange symbols connected to a history that supposedly never existed. Even more mysterious, the vessel only comes to life when Lee boards it.

Lee soon finds herself commanding the Seaview and its crew, working alongside government officials she isn't sure she can trust. Their missions take them into dangerous underwater territory as they investigate mysterious forces finding their way into our world.

As the crew ventures farther into the unknown, Lee begins uncovering secrets about Earth's oceans, a forgotten chapter of human history, and the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

That's a pretty awesome direction for the franchise, especially with the combination of underwater exploration, ancient mysteries, and science fiction.

The idea of a submarine connected to a lost civilization offers plenty of possibilities for some wild storytelling.

The new series is inspired by the 1961 film Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and the ABC television series that followed, both created by Irwin Allen. Legendary Television is producing the reboot in association with the Irwin Allen Estate.

Jon Jashni is also executive producing, while Derek Thielges serves as co-producer.

Ridley, of course, is best known for playing Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Her more recent projects include the survival thriller We Bury the Dead and the London-set action thriller Cleaner, in which she starred alongside Clive Owen.

Her other film credits include Young Woman and the Sea, The Marsh King's Daughter, Chaos Walking, Ophelia, Murder on the Orient Express, and Peter Rabbit. She's also appeared on television in Mr. Selfridge, Toast of London, Younger, and Casualty.

Ridley will next appear in director Tim West's fantasy adventure Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. She's also attached to the romantic comedy The Last Resort opposite Alden Ehrenreich.

There's no premiere date yet, and Paramount+ hasn't announced when production might begin.
