At least five people lost their lives, while eight others sustained serious injuries in a road accident that occurred on Sunday in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State.

The incident was confirmed by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Desk Officer in Agaie, Hussaini Guregi.

According to him, the crash involved a passenger laden trailer carrying about 40 people and a tanker.

Guregi explained that the trailer was travelling from Gusau in Zamfara State to Shagamu in Ogun State when the accident happened.

He stated that five victims died instantly, while the injured passengers were rushed to the General Hospital in Agaie for medical treatment.

Early findings indicate that the accident was caused by a faulty tanker that had been left on the road and an unsuccessful overtaking attempt by another trailer.

“As the trailer carrying the passengers tried to avoid the stationary tanker, the driver lost control, resulting in the crash,” Guregi said.

The bodies of the deceased is said to have been deposited at the General Hospital Agaie mortuary, while authorities continue to investigate the incident.
