Police detain officers, launch probe into alleged assault on civilian in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has began investigation into the alleged assault of a civilian by police officers in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, with the officers involved already identified, transferred, and detained.

In a press statement issued on Monday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, the Command said the Commissioner of Police, Hope Urunwa Okafor, has ordered immediate action upon receiving the report of the incident.

According to the statement, the Commissioner directed that the officers involved be transferred to the Command Headquarters and instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The Command disclosed that the officers have been detained pending the outcome of the investigation and will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures in line with the findings.

The police also expressed sympathy with the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, assuring the public that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly, transparently, and without bias.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and accountability, the Ebonyi State Police Command stressed its respect for the fundamental rights of citizens and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against brutality and all forms of misconduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.

The Command assured residents that any officer found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with established police regulations.
