37 miners’ deaths: ‘We must strengthen regulation of artisanal mining’ — Kebbi gov

Kebbi State Government has called for stronger regulation of artisanal mining and enforcement of safety standards following the deaths of 37 miners, including alleged minors, in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State.

Governor Nasir Idris made the call while expressing condolences to the Niger State Government and families of the victims in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris.

Idris expressed sympathy to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the bereaved families and the people of the state over the incident.

He said the deaths highlighted the need to strengthen the regulation of artisanal mining and enforce safety standards to protect people engaged in mining activities.

He said Kebbi State would collaborate with the Niger State Government to promote safer mining practices, public awareness and alternative livelihood opportunities for vulnerable youths in communities along the states’ shared border.

The governor prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and for their families to be granted the strength to bear the loss.

He also directed relevant authorities in Kebbi State to observe a moment of reflection and offer special prayers for the victims.
