2027: Jonathan remains PDP member – Turaki-led faction insists
by Sunday Dennis · Daily PostA faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the party.
The group disclosed that Jonathan recently participated in the party’s digital membership registration exercise and personally completed his registration in his ward.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, the party dismissed campaign posters circulating on social media linking the former president to other political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
The faction described the posters as misleading and urged Nigerians to disregard suggestions that Jonathan had joined any political party outside the PDP.
According to the statement, some of the campaign materials portray Jonathan as a presidential candidate, while others pair him with different politicians as running mates.
The group maintained that Jonathan remains a duly registered member of the PDP under the Turaki-led faction and added that the former president reaffirmed his membership during a recent meeting with the party’s interim National Working Committee.
It explained that the clarification became necessary because Nigerian law prohibits an individual from belonging to more than one political party at the same time.
The faction also alleged that some individuals might attempt to secretly register Jonathan and other politicians in multiple parties without their consent.
The group subsequently called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the general public to ignore any alleged registration records or campaign materials associating Jonathan with any political party other than the PDP.
