Police summon officers over alleged assault of Adeleke in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has ordered some officers accused of assaulting a man, Olugbenga Adeleke, to appear before the Commissioner of Police following the circulation of a video in which he narrated his alleged ordeal.

The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this on Friday, saying the Divisional Police Officer of Ebenezer Police Station, Alagbado/Ojokoro, had been directed to produce the officers involved on Monday, September 14, 2026.

Adeleke, a resident of Akera Tide community in the Alakuko/Alagbado area of Lagos, had petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as well as human rights organisations, alleging that policemen attached to the station assaulted, unlawfully detained and extorted him.

According to Adeleke, he was returning home on September 6, 2026, when he was stopped by some men who were not wearing police uniforms. He alleged that before he could ascertain why he was being stopped, one of the men struck him in the face, after which he was dragged into a bus and taken to Ebenezer Police Station.

In a video circulating on social media, Adeleke alleged that he was subjected to further assault at the station and detained overnight without being told the reason for his arrest. He also claimed that the team leader, whom he identified as “Sheri,” spoke Igbo fluently.

Adeleke said, “When we got to the station, I repeatedly asked what I had done and why I was there. Instead of giving me a clear explanation, I was slapped and beaten again inside the station. Nothing was found on me apart from my phone.

“I was detained overnight and placed in a cell. The following morning, I was brought out and told to sit under a tree within the station. Later, my phone died. I was told it would be charged so that I could call someone to come and ‘bail’ me. I asked, ‘Bail for what? What have I done?’

“I was told that someone should come with money before I would be released. I kept asking what offence I had committed, but I was not given a satisfactory explanation.”

He further alleged that he sustained a serious eye injury during the incident and called on the police authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his arrest and alleged assault.

“Why did I have to suffer this injury without being given a clear explanation of what I had done? I am calling on the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Police Command, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, human rights organisations and other relevant authorities to urgently investigate this matter.

“I am asking that the identities of the officers or persons involved be established, CCTV or other available evidence be preserved, witnesses be interviewed, and appropriate action be taken against anyone found to have acted unlawfully,” he added.

Adeleke also alleged that other individuals were brought to the station during the period he was detained, claiming that they were also subjected to extortion by the police.

Reacting to the allegations, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the command had commenced an investigation after the video surfaced online.

“The Command has seen the circulating video. The Complaint Response Unit has reached out to the complainant, who has been invited but is yet to respond.

“Meanwhile, the Command has commenced investigation, and the DPO has been directed to bring the officers involved before the CP. Both parties are expected at the command on Monday, September 14, 2026, for further investigation,” she said.
