Police arrest 62-year-old suspect over circulation of fake currency in Nasarawa

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa have arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, over alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit currency in the State.

The suspect, said to be a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was arrested by officers attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia following credible intelligence.

According to the police, Hassan was arrested at a cattle market in Lafia while allegedly trading with fake N1,000 notes.

Police investigations revealed that the suspect confessed to obtaining the counterfeit currency from an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia, who is currently at large.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was apprehended at the cattle market in Lafia while actively trading in fake N1,000 denomination notes,” the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police also urged members of the public, particularly traders, fuel station attendants, POS operators, and transport workers, to remain vigilant in their daily transactions.

“The public should look out for signs such as poor print quality, smaller size, duplicated serial numbers, and absence of visible security features,” the statement added.

He further advised residents to promptly report any suspicious activity involving counterfeit currency to the nearest police station.

The police assured that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
