Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Wednesday morning

1. Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has vowed that his party will restore fuel subsidy “in its own way” if elected, insisting that Nigerians deserve affordable fuel prices. Kwankwaso, who spoke in an exclusive interview with Arise News on Tuesday, faulted the manner in which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed the subsidy.

2. Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, three months after dumping the African Democratic Congress over allegations of rigged presidential primaries. Lawal announced his move on Tuesday in Abuja, declaring total support for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

3. The Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has reset the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 23 percent. Olayemi Cardoso, CBN Governor, made the revelation while addressing the media on Tuesday, after the committee’s 307th meeting in Abuja.

4. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of lying about the alleged N50 billion funding from the Federal Government for the upgrade of the Ibadan International Airport. Wike, on Monday, claimed that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration supported the Oyo State Government with N50 billion for the airport project, but Makinde denied the claim.

5. A man identified simply as Tosin has reportedly been killed by suspected cultists after he was allegedly robbed in the Egbin area of Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State. It was learnt on Tuesday that the incident occurred on September 15, after Tosin travelled from Ondo State to attend an event in the community. According to a source, Tosin briefly stepped out of the venue while the event was ongoing, when he was allegedly accosted and attacked by some hoodlums.

6. A schoolchild is missing after a flood swept through a section of the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, with the police launching a search operation for the child. Nine persons, comprising seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued from the flooded route following heavy rainfall across parts of the state between Monday and Tuesday.

7. Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued six female students of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, and their commercial driver after they were abducted along the Daye–Malumfashi Road in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State. The victims were abducted after armed assailants attacked a commercial vehicle travelling from Kaduna to Katsina on Monday.

8. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has told the senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe, that she will not return to the Senate in 2027, as he defended the FCT Administration’s borrowing for infrastructure projects. According to Vanguard, Wike made the remarks on Tuesday while responding to questions from journalists during an inspection of ongoing road projects in the FCT.

9. An independent 10-member panel has been inaugurated to investigate the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. The panel was inaugurated on Tuesday by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja, following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident.

10. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday charged chairmen of the 774 local government areas to ensure that their councils do not become breeding grounds for political violence as the country moves towards the 2027 general election. The President asked the council chairmen to adopt zero tolerance for political thuggery, intimidation, hate speech and violence, warning them against allowing young Nigerians to be recruited for electoral violence.
