1. The cardinal and former archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan, has expressed concern that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to win the 2027 elections “by all means”, warning that the resources available to the government could undermine the credibility of the electoral process. Onaiyekan also said people around the president were presenting him with a “rosy picture” of the country that does not reflect the realities confronting many Nigerians.

2. Katsina State Police Command has foiled a suspected bandit attack on Sabon Gulbi village, Musawa Local Government Area, killing one of the attackers and recovering an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and an operational motorcycle. The command said the operation was carried out by a joint tactical team comprising police operatives and personnel of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps, KSCWC.

3. President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi were among the 19 politicians who made the tentative list of presidential candidates published yesterday by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of next year’s election. Published alongside the politicians’ names were their running mates and the personal documents of all the nominees to enable the public scrutinise them.

4. The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, has said that the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to work alone and his attempts to float his own political structure too early after he assumed office are the biggest political sins of his estranged godson and Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara. He said Fubara’s actions clearly showed that he undermined those who supported him and the structure that brought him to power.

5. The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said that when former President Olusegun Obasanjo had little to his name after leaving prison, he, Atiku, fed and clothed Obasanjo, ensuring he lacked nothing. The revelation is coming on the heels of Obasanjo’s statement that he regretted picking Atiku as his vice.

6. The Presidency on Saturday slammed representatives of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria over their conduct during a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the clerics were not the sole custodians of truth on the state of the nation. It also faulted the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, for publicly disclosing details of the closed-door meeting, describing his comments as inappropriate and a breach of the confidentiality expected of such high-level engagements.

7. Fire, on Saturday, engulfed the headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria in Abuja. The blaze reportedly started on the fourth floor of the building, located opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters, and spread across the upper section of the structure.

8. The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing the alleged assault of a gold seller by some policemen in the Festac area of Lagos. The command disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday, saying the officers captured in the video had been identified as personnel attached to Area E Command.

9. Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has dismissed claims that 176 residents were abducted during the deadly terrorist attack on Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state. The CP stressed that although security agencies acknowledged that several residents were taken away by the attackers, there was no official confirmation that the number of abductees was 176.

10. Troops of 34 Artillery Brigade, operating under Operation UDOKA through ongoing Operation EASTERN SANITY II, have arrested key members of a notorious criminal syndicate responsible for the ambush of troops on May 4. This is contained in a statement by the acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, on Saturday in Enugu. Ayeni said that the unfortunate ambush claimed the life of one soldier and left another wounded.
