British media awash with reports of plots to oust Starmer as Labour leader

MEMBERS OF THE UK Labour Party are preparing to challenge their embattled leader, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to multiple reports published in the British media today.

Starmer has been under pressure over his numerous U-turns on policy decisions since taking office in 2024. Having appeared to fend moves against him from senior members of his party earlier this year, Starmer has found himself in the spotlight again recently over the appointment of Jeffrey Epstein associate Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. 

Now, with a number of elections looming across the UK, and polling indicating a blowout for the Labour government, many British media outlets reported this morning that the knives are being sharpened in earnest. 

The reports have focused on three potential challengers: Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Starmer’s former deputy PM Angela Raynor and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham. 

Streeting is seen by many as a continuity figure in the mould of Starmer, Raynor has made it clear she stands to the left of the government on numerous issues, while Burnham is a popular mayor who would need an MP to step aside in a by-election so he could get a seat in parliament and mount a challenge.

The Times of London reported that Raynor is planning to “take the temperature” of Labour colleagues in the days after the upcoming elections, which are set to take place on 7 May. 

The Times said that should Raynor declare her intentions to take the Labour leadership, Streeting is reportedly “ready to go over the top” as well. 

The Telegraph, Independent and radio broadcaster LBC all carried similar reports about Streeting this morning.

The Guardian said yesterday that Burnham has a plan to return to Westminster “within weeks”, citing his supporters. 

Burnham was blocked by the Labour leadership from contesting a by-election last year.

On 7 May, Britons will vote in local government elections, Scottish Parliament elections, Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament) elections and mayoral elections in England.

The Times said polling predicts a historic electoral disaster for Labour, with the party predicted to lose more than 1,800 seats.
