God of War Laufey set for 2027 launch as disc version confirmed
by Stefan L · tsaStudio Santa Monica has incidentally confirmed that God of War Laufey is set to release in 2027, after stating that the game will be available on disc.
“We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc,” the studio plainly stated on social media, and with Sony ending production of discs for any game launching in January 2028 or later, that means the spin-off story will have to launch before then.
God of War Laufey was revealed during the State of Play showcase for Summer Game Fest, branching off from the opening moments of the 2018 God of War at the point that Kratos cremates his deceased wife.
Faye, aka Laufey the Just (portrayed once more by Deborah Ann Woll) wakes up in a different realm entirely, the Everywhen, which is an afterlife to gods of all religions. She quickly comes face-to-face with Sekmet from the Egyptian pantheon of gods, and Begtse, the god of war from Tibetan mythology, who have her thrown into captivity. There she meets a talking gelatinous cube called Phranque (Jack Quaid), and the ribbons of a sword called Rue (Perlina Lau), which is a turn for the even more bizarre. They are the ones who reveal that this is the afterlife of the gods, as opposed to one specific mythology, and spur Faye on to rediscovering control of her powers and breaking out, giving her a sword that promises the wielder vast powers within this setting.
As we stand on the precipice of an all-digital future with PlayStation games, both for the next generation and the tail end of the PS5 generation, many companies are rushing to confirm that their games are still coming out on disc. It is quite strange that this even extends to PlayStation’s own studios, but these are strange times indeed.
