Kratos will return in the game after God of War Laufey

Alongside the reveal of God of War Laufey’s release date at San Diego Comic Con, it has also been confirmed that Kratos will return as the lead character in the next game in the series.

This was confirmed by Sony Santa Monica Head of Creative Cory Barlog at the SDCC panel for Laufey.

During the panel, Barlog said, “Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next. Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”

Barlog was talking about how part of God of War Laufey’s purpose is to expand the universe further, and you can certainly see this as a direct avenue to bring Kratos into contact with a broader variety of mythologies and godly pantheons in a more fluid fashion.

Kratos’ original trilogy (and a few spin-offs and prequels) all dealt with the Greek pantheon and mythology, and it was a hard pivot for Kratos to suddenly be living in the frigid north and dealing with Norse gods for the 2018 series reboot. Many story points and arcs have now been closed off from God of War Ragnarok, but God of War Laufey will run concurrently and feature Kratos’ wife in her afterlife of the gods, having been cremated at the start of the 2018 game. In the reveal trail back in June, Faye quickly comes face-to-face with Sekmet from the Egyptian pantheon of gods, and Begtse, the god of war from Tibetan mythology, then befriends a talking gelatinous cube called Phranque, and the ribbons of a sword called Rue. Both of these characters become Laufey’s allies as she seeks to restore her own powers, figure out what is happening, and get back to Kratos and Atreus.

God of War Laufey will be the last new game in the series to release on physical media.
