One dead; four injured after lorry rams omni van near Vaniyambadi

A 38-year-old woman was killed while four others were injured after a omnivan they were travelling was hit by cement laden lorry at Girisamuthiram village near Vaniyambadi town in Tirupattur on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 44) on Friday.

Police said that the deceased has been identified as Naziya Begam, a native of Vaniyambadi town. Initial inquiry revealed that along with five light vehicle learners, Mohammed Iqbal (45), an instructor of a private driving school, was teaching driving skills to one of the learners in the omnivan when he took a sharp turn on the stretch. Lorry driver V. Murugan (34), who was driving the lorry behind the driving school car on the stretch, caught unaware of sudden turn by the car and hit the vehicle.

In the impact, all occupants in the omnivan were severely injured. Immediately, other motorists and passerby rushed to the spot and rescued injured persons. They also alerted Vaniyambadi Taluk police and ambulances. Injured persons were admitted at Government Taluk Hospital in Vaniyambadi town. A case was registered. Traffic was affected for around half an hour on the route. The lorry driver was arrested. A probe is underway.
