Tiruchi govt. hospital team of doctors removes tumour from woman’s stomach
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduDoctors from the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) performed a surgery on a woman and removed a tumour at the junction where the pancreatic and bile ducts join the small intestine recently.
According to an official statement, the 57-year-old patient from Kondaiyampettai, Tiruvanaikovil, had been suffering from jaundice for two months and had been taking native medication for it. She was found to have a periampullary growth with high bilirubin levels that required surgical intervention, known as pancreatico-duodenectomy or Whipple procedure. The surgery usually needs removal of gall bladder, bile duct, part of stomach, small intestine and part of pancreas.
Under the guidance of S. Kumaravel, dean, K.A.P. Viswantham Medical College, MGMGH medical superintendent Udhaya Aruna and deputy superintendent Arun Raj, a surgical team headed by R.R. Kannan, performed the operation that lasted five hours on January 8.
