Teenager killed after wooden pole from underconstruction building falls on her
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduA 15-year-old girl returning home from school was killed of severe head injuries when a wooden pole from an underconstruction building fell on her in V.V. Puram on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Tejeswini, a resident of K.G. Nagar.
According to the police, she was studying in class 10 at Vasavi Vidya Niketan and her father Sudhakara Rao works as a driver at a private firm. The incident occurred on National High School Road, near the National College metro station.
The wooden pole supporting a scaffolding on the sixth floor of the underconstruction building, became detached and fell on her. She sustained severe head injuries and collapsed on the ground. Passers-by first rushed her to Victoria Hospital, where she was referred to NIMHANS and shifted there. However, she succumbed to her injuries later in the day, said the police.
Tejeswini was a meritorious student and also very active in extra-curricular activities, said Parvathy, an aunt of the victim, adding that she was also learning dance.
The parents of the victim blamed the negligence of the owner of the underconstruction building and the engineer for the incident.
It was a busy area and lots of people including children use the road. The police had cordoned off the area and directed workers in the building to ensure the safety of pedestrians and put up a safety net around the building as a precautionary measure.
The V.V. Puram police visited the spot and took stock of the situation. The police are awaiting a formal complaint from the girl’s parents for further investigation.
