Calicut varsity Senate to meet on Jan. 13 to pick nominee for V-C selection panel
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Senate of the University of Calicut is scheduled to hold a special meeting on January 13 to pick its nominee for the search-cum-selection committee that will choose a new vice-chancellor (V-C) for the institution.
This comes against the backdrop of Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar taking charge as the new Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, on January 2. The four-year tenure of M.K. Jayaraj, the previous V-C, had ended on July 12, 2024. P. Raveendran, Professor, Department of Chemistry, has been holding the charge ever since after former Governor Arif Mohammed Khan nominated him to the post.
The three-member selection committee should have nominees from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the university Senate, and the State government. Clause 7.3 of the UGC regulations, 2018, stipulates that the members of the search committee shall be “persons of eminence in the sphere of higher education” and “shall not be connected in any manner with the university concerned or its colleges.” Though the Senate had earlier scheduled a meeting in September 2024, it was postponed.
