BJP releases second list with 29 candidates for Delhi Assembly election

With this list, the BJP has so far named candidates for 58 seats for the election to the 70-member Assembly

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its second list of 29 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly election. The party fielded Kapil Mishra, a former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA who was disqualified from the party in 2019, replacing incumbent Karawal Nagar MLA Mohan Singh Bisht.

Joining the ranks of sons of former Chief Minister of Delhi in the fray, Harish Khurana has been fielded from Moti Nagar. The party had earlier fielded Parvesh Sahib Singh from New Delhi, son of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma. The Congress has fielded Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

With the second list, the BJP has so far named candidates for 58 seats for the election to the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The election is scheduled to be held on February 5 and the votes will be counted on February 8.

Additionally, the BJP features five women in the second list including Deepti Indora from Matia Mahal and Neelam Pahalwan from Najafgarh. The party has fielded a total of seven women in the two lists.

Sitting MLA, Abhay Verma has also been retained from Laxmi Nagar. The party has replaced two out of the seven sitting MLAs. The first list of the party featured eight turncoats. BJP leader Karnail Singh will contest against AAP’s former Minister Satyendar Jain from Shakur Basti. The party also features a range of sitting MCD councillors including Gajendra Daral, who joined the party after winning as an independent candidate in MCD polls from Mundka.

Several candidates featured in the list include MLAs who have previously lost polls in 2013, 2015, and 2020.

The BJP, which last held the reins of Delhi in 1998 and won three and eight seats in the elections of 2015 and 2020, is looking to secure a majority in the 70-member Assembly, the election for which is due in February after a 26-year break. The AAP has already announced candidates for all seats while the Congress has released 48 names so far.
