Two arrested in ATM robbery case in Mayiladuthurai district

The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the recent ATM robbery at the Indian Bank branch in Melasalai, Vaitheeswaran Koil in Mayiladuthurai district.

About ₹6.08 lakh was stolen from the ATM in the robbery, which occurred on the night of January 5.

Based on a complaint filed by branch manager Ashok Kumar, the Vaitheeswaran Koil police, led by Inspector (In-Charge) Puyal Balachandran, registered a case and began investigations. Acting on instructions from Superintendent of Police (SP) G. Stalin, the team analysed CCTV footage, investigated known offenders, and formed two special teams under the supervision of Deputy SP P. Rajkumar to trace the culprits and recover the stolen cash.

During a vehicle check near Vaitheeswaran Koil railway station on Saturday, the police intercepted two individuals on a two-wheeler who gave inconsistent responses when questioned.

A search of their vehicle revealed bundles of cash. Upon interrogation, the suspects, identified as D. Wilbert Raj of Panneer Selvam Street, Sirkazhi, and R. Vignesh of Melapathi, Sembanarkovil, confessed to the robbery.

The police recovered ₹3.35 lakh, a mobile phone worth ₹31,000, and a silver chain valued at ₹5,000 from the suspects. Both were remanded in judicial custody.
