V-C selection: Calicut varsity postpones Senate meeting
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe University of Calicut has postponed its Senate meeting scheduled for January 13 to recommend a nominee for the search-cum-selection committee which will choose a new vice-chancellor (V-C) for the institution.
The current V-C in-charge of the university, P. Raveendran, was appointed by the Chancellor, after M.K. Jayaraj, the incumbent, completed his tenure in July 2024. The search-cum-selection committee will have nominees of the university Senate, University Grants Commission (UGC), and the State government.
The decision to postpone the Senate meeting comes against the backdrop of the draft regulations on the appointment of university V-Cs, college principals, and teachers recently brought out by the UGC. A notice for the Senate meeting was already given when the regulations were declared. It is learnt that the university authorities are now awaiting the final shape of the regulations before going ahead with recommending a Senate nominee. Both the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Opposition Congress have opposed the draft regulations. There are also reports about them taking a legal recourse challenging the new proposals.
