Green Schools scheme to be implemented in three government schools in Tiruchi district
by Ancy Donal Madonna · The HinduThe Green Schools Scheme will be implemented in three government schools in Tiruchi district as part of a government initiative to sensitise students to climate change and encourage them to take various green measures.
The scheme would be implemented in three schools in the district - Government High School in Edamalaipatti Pudur, Government Higher Secondary School in Tiruverumbur and Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Musiri. Each school would be allotted ₹20 lakh under the initiative, and the expenditure shall be met from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board funds.
The schools would adopt green measures such as energy efficiency by using solar lighting and solar pumps, setting up solar borewells, adapting rainwater harvesting, composting, creating vegetable gardens, medicinal gardens, and fruit trees, reducing water use, recycling wastewater, and creating a plastic-free environment. Solar power would meet all electricity requirements for the identified schools.
The initiative aims to impart the importance of agriculture and sustainable living. Students will be able to learn various aspects of farming, including technologies such as greenhouses, micro irrigation, and solar pump sets. Vegetables raised under the initiative will be used for the noon meal scheme. The idea is to reduce the use of conventional energy sources and switch to solar power in the coming years, an official from the school education department said.
“The integration of gardening into school curricula fosters a deeper understanding of the significance of farming among students. This initiative will be led by the eco-clubs in our school,” said Pushpavalli, headmistress of Government High School in Edamalaipatti Pudur. There are 750 students and 21 teachers in the school.
Last year, the scheme was introduced at Government Higher Secondary School in Kanjanayakkanpatti, Valanadu.
