The Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) has strongly criticised the Sangh Parivar of turning temples into centres of political activity. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)’s Haindava Shankaravam, Chalo Vijayawada, was aimed at taking control of temples in the State. Such moves will harm the communal harmony, and temples should be under the control of the government, CPI-M said.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday (January 03), CPI-M state secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said Sangh Parivar and VHP efforts would disrupt social unity and create divisions among people.  The BJP-led government’s “Chalo Vijayawada” programme was  anti-people and aimed at gaining control over temples under the guise of removing government regulation.

The RSS and affiliated organizations are misleading the public with their attempts to dominate temples and create sectarian divisions.  Everyone should oppose such actions, reiterating that the management of temples should be based on religious principles, with the government overseeing only secular matters, he said, adding that the  government regulation is necessary for the smooth functioning of temples.

CPI-M  Central Committee member M.A. Gafur and State Committee member C.H. Babu Rao also spoke.
