Coimbatore city witnessed 389 crimes against women, children in 2024
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduAs many as 398 cases of crimes against women and children were registered in Coimbatore city in 2024.
As per the data shared by the police, four cases of rape and 45 cases of molestation were reported within the jurisdiction of the city police last year. Five cases were related to alleged abduction of women and girls.
While the city police registered 35 cases, wherein women were subjected to cruelty by husband and relatives, deaths related to dowry harassment were nil.
Cases registered under Section 4 (penalty for harassment of women) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act topped the list with 224 cases.
According to the police, 76 cases were registered in 2024 under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) (ITP) Act and 200 persons were arrested. The police also rescued the victim women and handed them over to their family members, relatives and caretakers.
Out of the 389 cases of crimes against women and children registered in 2024, the police detected 388 cases.
In 2024, persons involved in two rape cases, one case of cruelty by husband and relatives, six cases of women harassment and one ITP Act case were convicted by different courts.
POCSO cases
The city police registered 80 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2024. Accused involved in a total of 19 POCSO cases were convicted by the special court in Coimbatore in 2024.
