The election is likely to be decided across seven battleground states - Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.
The winner of the election is decided by using the Electoral College. Voters do not directly elect their president but instead, the individual votes in a state are typically reflected in votes cast by electors in the Electoral College.
The Electoral College is made up of 538 electors who cast votes on behalf of the population of the state. In order to claim victory a candidate needs 270 votes to win the presidency.
The number of people per state is roughly proportionate to the population, which means each state has a different number of electoral college votes.
