Fake Amazon delivery workers armed with sledgehammer brutally attack man, 66, in his own home
George "Dirk" Hardison answered his door to two delivery drivers on Saturday morning and assumed he was receiving a package - but in a horrifying twist they barged into his home and attacked him with a sledgehammer
by Phoebe Tonks, Abigail O'Leary · The MirrorA 66 year old man has been critically injured after he was attacked in his house by two crooks masquerading as Amazon delivery guys. George "Dirk" Hardison, opened the door at his Savannah home on Saturday morning, lured by the sight of what seemed to be Amazon uniforms and expecting a package.
Instead, he was brutally assaulted as the men barged in and ferociously beat him with a sledgehammer, in a sickening onslaught that lasted nearly eight agonising minutes, according to WTOC. The spine-chilling episode was captured on video, showing Dirk's desperate pleas for help.
Neighbours who rushed to his aid found him in a horrific state, drenched in blood with severe head wounds. He was immediately transported to the hospital, where doctors had to apply 14 staples to his head.
The assailants fled with a meagre $80 after the brutal beating. Surveillance cameras recorded footage of the pair clad in something closely resembling Amazon attire and masks, also seen absconding with a package.
With the culprits still at large, described as two black males in their 20s with medium brown skin tones, detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, O'Connell's Pub, where Dirk serves as a bartender, has set up a GoFundMe page, stating: "The police are investigating this heinous crime, but in the meantime, let's show Dirk the love and support he deserves," reports the Mirror US.
In a formal comment on the incident, Amazon declared: "Based off our internal investigation, we can confirm that these individuals were not making a scheduled delivery for Amazon. We monitor the Internet regularly for unauthorized Amazon apparel and demand that those items be removed when and where we can. People who make deliveries on behalf of Amazon do not routinely knock on doors nor ask customers to sign for packages unless already prearranged."
The statement was released following a string of related offences including the arrest of a faux firefighter accused of exploiting his disguise to loot amidst the catastrophic LA wildfires. The alleged thief was apprehended appearing abashed as officers took him into custody, spotted in an outdated California Fire jacket during the chaos of the Pacific Palisades blaze on Saturday afternoon.
LAPD also reportedly detained an alleged accomplice in close proximity to the initial arrest. Both were nabbed near the famed Getty Villa, which narrowly escaped the inferno's wrath, though it remains unclear if they were actually caught with stolen goods.
Photographer Eric Fox told The Daily Mail: "We saw the one subject wearing the old CDF (California Department of Forestry) jacket riding his moped up PCH. The other subject was riding a scooter. By the time we pulled up to the checkpoint to tell the deputies, they had already detained them. He was the only one wearing a fire uniform."
