Donald Trump could take action on Greenland 'within weeks' as residents worry

America's Arctic commissioner Thomas Dans said the US president wants to annex the territory quickly, something Greenland minister Naaja Nathanielsen said is 'unfathomable'

Donald Trump wants to move "at high speed" and could take action on Greenland "within week or months", a senior administration official has claimed.

America's Arctic commissioner Thomas Dans, who is considered one of the main proponents of the president's interest in Greenland, said Trump won't give up on his idea. Dans, who has been working on the issue since 2020, said there might be noticeable progress soon - but admitted a potential acquisition would take longer than that to complete.

"This is a train route with multiple stops," he told USA TODAY. "Things could move on an express basis, skip the local stops and go direct to the main station. That's where President Trump wants to move it − at high speed."

It comes as a senior Greenland government official said it's "unfathomable" that the United States is discussing taking over a NATO ally and urged the Trump administration to listen to voices from the Arctic island's people. Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland's minister for business and mineral resources, said people in the territory - which belongs to Denmark - are "very, very worried" over the administration's desire for control of the island.
